Its not the band that you’re in that makes you cool, it’s how you treat people and how humble and professional you act. This whole “Like my band” and/or “vote for my band to win” is ridiculous. I’m not saying that promotion online is a bad thing, because it isn’t…IN MODERATION. Promote your band or show all you want, DON’T PUSH IT IN MY FACE, STOP MAKING EVENT PAGES FOR ME TO CHECK OUT YOUR NEW SONG OR A SHOW THAT YOU HAVE COMING UP. What if I sent out Farmville requests to everyone? It’s the same thing. And maybe instead of being on facebook all day, maybe you could print off flyers and actually talk people into going to a show in person.
Yes, the scene is a family, a HUMBLE RELAXED NON AGGRESSIVE FAMILY, when the family has its chemistry right. The scene needs to be how it used to be. Back when it was something that people could enjoy, and not have to avoid people because of their differences, or because there’s conflict between two groups.
A band isn’t about how you get your name out, and how you bring your merch to the local mall, or to the beach so that people can buy your stuff. That’s like calling someone on your birthday so that they HAVE to wish you a happy birthday, which is kind of rude. I remember when shows were a place to hang out and a place to relate to people. This whole popularity contest is just foolishness and it’s silly. The scene NEEDS to change, because all of these bands that keep asking promoters to play their shows is not helping the scene at all, because then you get the same show over and over and over, which is sad, because it made two of the best promoters in the scene quit, and ruined it for them. The scene back then was something to be proud of, and all of these people who call themselves promoters who put on 3 shows a year is stupid. STOP. If you can’t do a show, then maybe ask a promoter whose putting on a show anyway if you can’t help them out at one of their shows for free and help them out. It’s one thing to put on a show and then it’s another thing to call yourself a promoter, I could never put on a show myself, I’m not saying that it’s easy to, and I’m not saying that these people who put on 2-3 shows a year don’t deserve credit, yes they’re trying to help the scene, but it doesn’t help any, to book the same locals every show, it really doesn’t. And it doesn’t help the scene when the promoters act bigger than they are, and treat bands very ill-mannered, if you treat bands bad, they’re gonna treat you the same way, and I, myself am a little disappointed by some of the promoters and how they treat me now, when I used to play from them a lot a few years ago. I’m not saying the Traverse City/Kalkaska scene is better than Grand Rapids’, and vice versa. But today’s scene is not a family like it was. This might not mean anything coming from a 19 year old kid, but something needs to happen if the scene is going to change. Love me/Hate me for posting this, I don’t really care.
